Collodion Wet Plate Photography in the 21st Century

Image
The collodion wet-plate photography process popped up on the historical radar right before the more common daguerreotype exploded. The process uses a glass photographic plate coated in light-sensitive collodion. The plate is loaded into the camera immediately and exposed. The plate (which captures a latent negative image) has to be developed rather quickly, and then the etched plate is fixed, so that the positive image will appear. UK artist Sam Cornwell converted a camper to be a portable wet-plate darkroom. The film below documents his journey to Lacock Abbey, where Henry Fox-Talbot pioneered the wet-plate process with one of his early images of the Abbey's windows. PILGR IMAGE, by Sam Cornwell see the original post on the 500px.com blog Another photographer, Jake Potts of BrutonStroube photo house, found one of the coolest ways to customize his iPhone: use it as a wet plate. Clocks and Cameras, unzipped

Image
I've seen my share of computers and flashlights, etc. taken apart, but I've never seen a camera or a clock. Artist Hu Shaoming of China created one-of-a-kind pieces of art in his exhibition "Reconnecting Time." He meticulously revealed the mechanical innards of several antique items and added a stationary zipper to the openings. So cool! 1920s clock - Image courtesy Hu Shaoming   1930s camera - Image courtesy Hu Shaoming 1940s film camera - Image courtesy Hu Shaoming See more at  DesignBoom.com Hu Shaoming's other unzipped pieces: photos by the artist  Check out the rest of his portfolio here

Unconventional Art Materials - Duct Tape and Thread

Image
I've had my fair share of bored days in college where I made duct tape animals, and I've got friends who make wallets, bags, and even clothing out of duct tape. Never anything as intricate as artist Takahiro Iwasaki, who carves landscapes out of rolls of duct tape and creates thread sculpture masterpieces - buildings and electrical towers. I love the sculptures, but I disagree with their presentation: he sits his art on top of random objects, as seen below, on towels and toothbrushes, and I think it takes away from the delicacy of his pieces. Unconventional Art Materials - Books

I love reading! While the experience of poring over a story in an actual book is sliding away from mainstream, two artists are finding new ways to celebrate the magical nature of books.  Guy Laramee Canadian artist Guy Laramee uses a sandblaster to create book sculpture masterpieces in his home studio.  Book cave sculpture  Book cave sculpture Book wave sculpture  See how he does it: via Toxel.com Brian Dettmer bio/portfolio Another book sculpture artist who manipulates books and other materials. Electronic Tattoos...It's the beginning of an era

Image
We've all read those science-fiction books about aliens coming to Earth and implanting us humans with  under-the-skin  transmitting devices, or seen the James Bond series where they implant their operatives with electronic trackers. Soon, you'll be able to get an electronic "tattoo," a series of circuits applied directly to the surface of the skin with a rubber stamp. The circuit tattoo below, developed by scientist  John Rogers at the University of Illinois, allows a doctor to monitor a patient's vitals remotely. The tattoo is temporary for now, since skin naturally flakes off, preventing the circuit from remaining on the skin permanently. It is now covered with an elastic "bandage" to hold it in place. Researchers are looking to develop a method to insert this type of tattoo under the skin. We may end up with manual tattoo machines that apply electric tattoos, as opposed to electric tattoo machines applying manual ink!   Electrifying...  Ph...

The Artist Behind the Famous Photo - AMAZING!

Image
Photos from a new book by artist Tim Mantoani features 158 portraits of photographers on the 20x24" giant polaroid (see previous post) prints. These photographers, including Mary Ellen Mark, Bob Gruen, and Steve McCurry, wrote their thoughts under each photo - directly on the print. This resonated with me because my Tattoo project includes the hand-written stories behind each person's photo. The person's own handwriting makes the image-viewing experience much more personal.
