First blog post...

While I am film photographer at heart, I've moved into the digital age but haven't lost touch with the magic of film.

Paris: Baguette Day, A Palace and A Garden

Image
It's another beautiful day in Paris! We started our day with breakfast by the traffic circle in Bastille at a restaurant called Le Canon . We ordered the traditional breakfast, and one breakfast with an omelette and salad. The traditional French breakfast is a croissant, pain du chocolat, or a baguette with butter and jam, coffee or tea, and freshly-squeezed orange juice. We were a little lacking in protein and green vegetables so we opted for the omelette and salad as well. The OJ was sweet and warm, the tea was excellent, the baguettes were fresh and delightful with butter and jam, and the omelette and salad hit the spot. Then we were off to Versailles! The palace is closed on Mondays so we went on Tuesday morning. The lines were impossibly long, even in the morning, so we had to wait for an hour to get into the palace. But we made it! This is one of the front golden gates. Inside, the rooms, chapels, bed chambers, sitting, reading, and dining areas were all g...

Pinarello, a Waterfall, and the Swiss Alps

Image
After we left Venice, we drove north through Italy in search of the Pinarello factory, a bike manufacturer that makes the pinnacle of racing cycles. Rob really  wanted to see the place and maybe even sit on some bikes. Before we went to the store, we stopped in for a cappuccino. It's the first place on the trip we saw snow! Well, we found the store! But it was closed... Then we drove through the town Bergamo on the outskirts of Milan and se stopped there for lunch. My lunch! A cheese and veggie sub, accompanied by a bottled water. On our way up through Italy and into Switzerland, we saw this several times: This is called rime ice, and it's what happens when fog freezes on trees. You can see the exact height on the mountain where the fog settled and then froze.  After navigating Leigh (our driver for this leg of the trip) around the winding roads and hairpin turns of the Swiss Alps, I saw this up ahead, signaling that we had reached our hostel for th...

Capturing Natural Spirals

Image
Water is so interesting. The two little hydrogen and one little oxygen molecules flow together in solid (ice), liquid (water), or gas (vapor), and can also pick up traces of sediment or leftovers, depending on which environment it runs through. When water is cast off from something, it can behave in different ways. See my  previous post for some odd water behavior. Below are some examples of photographers capturing water being cast off in a logarithmic spiral: spiral from here photo by Arvin Rahimzadeh photo by Cody Slinger photo by Naveen Shunmuganathan via thisiscolossal  and flickr Photographers also have captured paint, milk, coffee, and other liquids demonstrating this phenomenon. See their incredible photographs below. photo by Manon Wethly   via thisiscolossal  and junkculture photos and video by Fabian Oefner See more photos on  thisiscolossal
