Day 2 Recap:
Joey and his team set up two lighting situations with models to demonstrate his shooting style "on location." He used a Canon 5D Mark III, outfitted with a 50mm portrait lens and the Lee universal lens hood, and tethered to a laptop with Capture 1. The first setup used one light (Elinchrom Rotalux octabank) and a white v-wall to bounce the light. He got several beautifully-lit seated and standing poses with this model. Capture 1 crashed twice, but Joey said that happens often, so they just reboot the camera and the computer and start again. One issue may have been the extension tether cord...Who knows? He prefers to use Capture 1 versus tethering to Lightroom or Aperture because he claims it has the truest skin tones.
DSLR vs. Medium Format Cameras:

Mamiya Leaf Credo Medium Format (images courtesy BH Photo)
DSLR - faster image capture, slightly less-quality resolution
Medium format - marginally slower image capture, larger files when tethered, but produces a thicker tonal range
On the second set, Joey used the same wall and strobe, but with a slightly different setup. There was a prop floor lamp behind the model and Joey enhanced its effect by adding another directed, gelled beauty dish to throw a light orange glow on the wall and on the side of Elana's face, to enhance the bare-bulb effect. He used a 1/4 stop CTO (color temperature orange) gel on the beauty dish. He then switched lenses to a 24-70mm to get wider shots.
The third model was set up on a seat in front of the window, and simulated a sunlight backlight using gelled strobes and ambient light. There was also a smoke machine set up to give the shot a hazy effect, and there was a crew member fanning the smoke slightly to get the desired effect. Joey's lens hood helped curb the "sun" flare a little, but that was the effect he was going for in this scene. He variated the poses and light slightly each time and achieved several different types of shots.
