Hermit Crabs Get New Shells

As focused as the world is on eliminating homelessness on the streets of our cities, one artist noticed a need for housing a for creatures who live a little farther below sea level. Check out the work of Aki Inomata, a Japanese artist who sculpted and photographed clear hermit crab shells decorated with cityscapes. She took each species of crab into consideration when designing the shells so that they would be inhabitable.

The shells are so intricate and beautiful!

For the installation of her show at the Ai Kowada gallery, she had the photographs displayed behind a slab of acrylic, a successful way to convey the weight and clarity of her work, as well as paralleling the content of the prints.
