Walking Tour of Istanbul: Day 2 (Part 2)

I did take a lot of pictures that day, and we saw a lot of cool things, so here are some more photos from Day 2!
Rob and Leigh outside the New Mosque
Andrew and Rob taking pictures of the harbor in Istanbul outside the New Mosque.
 An enormous car-and-people ferry
A billboard with the Turkish flag
Another smooshy kitty! Cats roamed around the city like squirrels.
This one was chilling at the Topkopi gardens.
A cool fire escape
Ancient ruins at Topkopi

We then walked to the Basilica Cistern, the largest in Istanbul. It's an enormous underground water reservoir that was built in the 6th century and has 336 columns. There are fish that live in the water, and when we went, the water level was very low.

Several long exposures, between 6 and 8 seconds.
You can see Rob and Leigh in this one, on the bottom left, looking at one of the info boards.

 It's me! (above)
This one reminds me of the scene in Lord of the Rings when Gandalf is standing on the bridge of Khazad-dum, telling the Balrog, "You shall not pass!"
At one corner of the cistern, there are two Medusa columns. Medusa was a significant figure in lore of this region: she had hair made of snakes and a face that would turn anyone who looked at it into stone.
 The Travelers!
Outside, a view of the Hagia Sophia.
This is the inside of the dome of the German fountain that sits in the Hippodrome plaza next to the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosques.
This is an Egyptian obelisk, erected by Theodosius in Istanbul.
Istanbul's equivalent to Baltimore's "Greatest City in America" benches.

More photos to come from day 3 in Istanbul and beyond!
